In the world of sales, there is a very common expression for that of a typical sales personality: Sales hunter

This is a pretty old expression but one that is very much still used today. For example, I’ve seen the phrase ‘sales hunter’ in job ads for sales people as well as leading CEO’s, owners, and higher level executives using the phrase every day to express how they need more people like these.

When you really examine it though, what does a hunter do? Well, a hunter hunts something. And what about the object the hunter is hunting? It’s running away as fast as it possibly can!

More specifically, in the world of business, a sales hunter is a person who is trying to hunt for specific customers; usually trying to coerce or manipulate them in order to get them to buy. More often than not, there are a few that finally give up and buy the product, but many ‘out run’ the hunter and they are getting better at doing so with every passing day.

Why is this happening? Because customers have more knowledge than some of the reps out there have. They know the product inside out and won’t be fooled by the old tactics and scripts the sales world has been teaching for decades.

So what do they want to see? They want to see your “virtue and talents.” They want to know who you are, what you believe in, what you stand for, and how you can relate to them and their business. If you get past that stage, then and only then, can you start building your worth as a true consultant and expert in your particular field.

How do you exactly do this? You do this by being a fisherman instead of a hunter. By that I mean just as a fish is attracted to bait, so too will you attract people to you. As one of my great mentors said it best “You attract success by the person you become.” In this way, people come to you rather than you running after them.

More importantly, the right people seek you out because they are attracted to the real, 100% authentic you! This will allow you to develop real, long lasting relationships that in turn, allow you to grow your business ten times faster than going out there hunting for it.

In fact, be the fisherman in everything you do. Lead the people you work with by attracting them to your goals, your vision and your mission. I guarantee your results will be more long lasting, impactful and greater than you ever thought possible!
